A celebration of a wonderful life - Bob Harvey

Saturday saw us say goodbye to our first guests of the year in time to be able to join a celebration of the life of a remarkable man who left us during the restrictions. Robert (Bob) Harvey passed away in December 2020 but due to the Covid restrictions at the time, it was only possible to hold a small family funeral. On Saturday his wider social group, including many of this former colleagues in the Marines, were able to remember his life, and what a life it was.

In addition to being a devoted husband, father and grand-father, Bob somehow found time to achieve distinguished service in the Marines, Special Boat Service, States of Jersey Police as well as being a Governor and massive supporter of Holidays for Heroes Jersey (H4HJ).

Isaac Newton famously said "If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants". For H4HJ Bob was one of the giants who made the Charity what it is today. In memory of Bob, this years Big Ride Out will be started by the waving of the Marines Flag. He will be sadly missed.

The service on Saturday concluded with the SBS Prayer which seemed remarkably apt. It starts

"We do not seek an easy life. Rather we pray for courage to face every task as and when it may arise. Bless our loved ones, and may they know how much we appreciate them. Equip us to resist evil, protect the vulnerable, pursue what is right, with guile to use our strength wisely, and guard us with humility that we may not think of ourselves more highly than we ought, nor underestimate others"
