In May 2025, thanks to the generosity and support of Holidays for Heroes Jersey, members of the Royal Navy Recovery Centre Hasler had the honour of taking part in the 80th anniversary celebrations of Jersey’s Liberation. It was an unforgettable experience—one filled with pride, reflection, and deep appreciation for the freedom the island regained on 9th May 1945. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed and included in a truly historic occasion. The week began with a moving visit to the Liberation Monument and cenotaph, where we joined veterans, dignitaries, and local residents in remembering those who endured the years of occupation and celebrated the return of freedom. The atmosphere was both respectful and uplifting—a fitting tribute to Jersey’s resilience.
Hearing the recorded stories of islanders who lived through the occupation was a powerful reminder of the courage and endurance shown during those difficult years. Their voices gave life to history, connecting past and present, and reminding us of the true cost and value of liberation. Throughout the week, we had the opportunity to engage with Jersey’s history, people, and natural beauty. A visit to the Jersey War Tunnels provided a sobering yet educational insight into the hardship experienced during the war years. Through personal accounts, artefacts, and preserved spaces, we gained a deeper appreciation of the islanders’ strength and spirit.
Our team made sure it was a week to remember with events like attending the liberation day parade and of recovery, camaraderie, and celebration. Trips to St Ouen’s Bay gave us the perfect space to unwind and take part in team sports, while the local biker community treated us to a fantastic island tour which was one of the many highlights of the week. It was a great energising way to see the beautiful landscapes of Jersey and connect with the local community. This journey was a chance to reflect, to recover, and to feel part of something.
We are incredibly grateful to Holidays for Heroes Jersey for making it all possible. Their continued dedication to supporting the recovery and wellbeing of service personnel is inspiring, and their efforts ensured this was truly a week to remember. We left Jersey with some precious memories.
